Department of Internal Medicine

The department of Internal Medicine is dedicated to excellent patient centered care. It is one of Victoria Hospital’s biggest and busiest departments, encountering roughly 6000 patients per month. The medical ward cares for patients suffering from lifestyle or non-communicable diseases like hypertension, heart attacks, emphysema and strokes as well as many communicable diseases, like pulmonary tuberculosis. The department has 72 inpatient beds, 3 ICU beds and a number of outpatient clinics and is well known for initiating the excellent Palliative Care programme (Abundant Life Palliative Care)

Victoria Hospital is a training site for the University of Cape Town’s Department of Medicine, delivering high quality academic programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Outpatient Clinics
There are a variety of clinics run by VICDOM. Diabetes and Asthma clinic , Rheumatology clinic, Infectious Diseases (HIV/AIDS, TB) clinic, Endocrine and other (Neurological, Cardiac and Respiratory) clinic, Stress ECG Clinic, Echo Cardiology Clinic, Abundant Life (Palliative Care) and a 4-week Cardiac Rehabilitation Workshop.

Dr. Shakeel Hoosain – Internal Medicine Consultant

Head of department, Medicine

Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, Dr Hoosain earned his undergraduate degree at Stellenbosch University before completing his specialist training at the University of Cape Town.

Dr Hoosain’s vision as Head of Department is to cultivate an environment where every individual can thrive. By facilitating development on all levels, he ensures that the growth of his team directly translates into superior care for their patients.

Dr Hoosain serves alongside a strong leadership team in the department, as seen in the pictures along side. Dr Sakeena Ebrahim, Internal Medicine consultant, Sister Ada Patterson, manager of medical female ward, Sister Nonwakazi Gqamani, manager of medical male ward, Sister Anthea Michaels, manager medical ward, Mr Baliso and Sr Armstrong, senior ICU nurses.

Abundant Life

Abundant Life is for Palliative Care patients who are unlikely to live longer than 6 to 12 months. This programme offers home visits, phone calls and twice monthly support groups to 180 patients.

Clinics

Other regular Clinics are a Stress ECG Clinic, Echo Cardiology Clinic and a 4-week Cardiac Rehabilitation Workshop partnering with the Dietetics Department.

Soccer Fitness Club

Prevention is key for illnesses like Childhood Obesity, so fitness is a focus of this club for children and teens from the local community, run from the Tramway Football Club in Southfield.
